kale boat kale Explanation: dal nome di una rete da pesca "kale" e non "kale ship" né "kale boat", trattandosi di imbarcazione baltica, non inglese. Kale Ship The Kale ship is unique in its design and was used only on Lake Vortsjarv - it is not found anywhere else. The name comes from the “kale” which is a largemeshed trawling net - these vessels were used as trawlers between 1930 and 1970. 60-70 years ago there were about 80 boats in use on the lake, every fisherman having his own boat. After the fishing stopped in the 1970s an attempt was made to use the ships for sailing competitions but this idea was not pursued. Eventually all the ships were destroyed. When it was decided to attempt the current building project it was found that one man, Vaino Leiaru, now 72, who had been building these ships when they were in use, was still alive and willing to become involved in the project. Vaino started working as a shipwright when he was 22 and had last worked on such a boat in 1968. He remembered how the boats had been constructed and even had some of the old plans. [...] The replica ship [...] is 12m long with a 15m mast. To suit the shallow waters of the lake her draught is shallow with a lifting centreboard giving a 1.2m draught when lowered. She was built with EU money under a PHARE programme and is used for training purposes and pleasure cruises on the lake. [...] In Soviet times other wooden boats were still built at Valma being mostly 12x3m open boats powered by engine. Reference: http://www.european-maritime-heritage.org/newsletter/EMH23.p... |
