Any beginner's dive like you've explained is known as a "trial dive". As confirmed by actual scuba diving instructor-my husband!!

Martin Cassell: this has been the term used for "taster sessions" for absolute beginners, held in the swimming pool rather than the sea, when I've been in France

Drmanu49: Well I don't seem to be the only one to practice the sport and have heard that term and I sure did not invent these refs! ;-)

-> As i mentioned before not only did I get the answer from the Horse's mouth ie my husband who is a scuba diving instructor but to make doubly sure he checked with his colleague. e had not heard of maiden dive.
