Spanish term

listas sábanas

I don't understand what you mean by "colocados por los partidos". Why have they been placed on the ballot?

This is like what we have in elections in Spain; you can't vote for individual candidates, you can only vote for complete party lists. It's the same thing as "listas cerradas", closed lists. The parties decide who goes on the list, and you vote (or not) for the complete package: all or nothing. It's like saying "blanket lists" or "blanket voting", except that it's not called that. I don't know of a colloquial name for it in English.

http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Listas_cerradas

"Closed list describes the variant of party-list proportional representation where voters can (effectively) only vote for political parties as a whole and thus have no influence on the party-supplied order in which party candidates are elected."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Closed_list

http://asofueralistasabana.blogia.com/2012/060401--ue-signif...

It's a terrible system. It means that people who secure power within the party are pretty well guaranteed office regardless of how useless they are; the electorate can't pick and choose.

(As far as I know, straight-ticket voting is choosing to vote for all the candidates from a particular party, but "listas sábanas" don't give you the choice: the parties give you a list of names and you take it or leave it as a whole; you can't vote for one without voting for all of them.)

Thanks, biged :) Yes; parties like it, but I don't think it's good for the voters.

Straight-ticket voting

As you said, this term refers to people voting for a single candidate on the ballot, without the option of selecting other parties taking over other ministerial or bureaucratic positions.

This is known as straight-ticket voting.
Example sentence:

Indiana is one of 11 states that still permits straight-ticket voting, or the ability to vote for all candidates affiliated with a particular political party by selecting a single option on the ballot.

Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : Yes, though I think this implies a degree of choice, whereas in Argentina you don't have any. So you'd need to say something like "the requirement to vote for a straight ticket".

coattail effect

The thing is, in Argentina, you can actually cut up the theoretical straight ticket and vote for candidates of several parties if you want. What people slam is the coattail effect, the fact that (most) people actually do not cut up their party tickets.

slates of candidates

The "slates of candidates" expression is the metaphor in English equivalent to the "ready sheets" metaphor in Spanish. In both cases, voters have to vote for a list of candidates that may be long. This system allows political parties to provide an elected position to their members that are loyal regardless of their personal, political credibilities.
