I might be wrong, but I think the italian term indicates the core player of a soccer team, such as Del Piero was for Juventus. So to be a giocatore bandiera should mean to be the heart and soul of a team, a core player that is. Any other suggestion is however well accepted, considering that I'm not an expert in this field.
