Discussion

Vladimir Alexandrov Feb 18, 2010:
Probably "too graphic"?
Alexandra Taggart (asker) Feb 18, 2010:
Anything to do with bloodthiesty pleasure is offensive.Further in the text come examples, describing hunters training their hunting dogs with stray cats, training guard dogs with tramps at night- it often results in death.
Natalia Volkova Feb 18, 2010:
I like other versions of translation, but I`d like to put in a word for the version with "haunt" too.
I think, the text we are translating is not about memory problems but about the emotional impact. It deals not with the memory as it is, but with the emotional memory, in particular. That`s why I dared
to digress from word-for-word translation of "memory".
Jack Doughty Feb 18, 2010:
Potentially offensive? I don't see why this question is so marked.

I just tried not to give a word for word translation but to render the meaning. And the word "haunt" fits the situation, I think.

I don`t think the proofreader will object to this version and change it into something about memory. The text is not about memory problems but about the emotional impact. It deals not with the memory as it is, but with the emotional memory, in particular.

Using a commonly used cliche reduces the emotional effect of the phrase.
And what is your ultimate target, after all - to please your proofreader
or to render the emotional connotation best?
Note from asker:
I like your answer very much, but, as I do not have any communication with the author - the proofreader, most likely, will change it back to something about "memory".Let us see.
