Spanish term

aula especial para niños que "presentan dificultades en la convivencia"

Spanish to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy \
This is actually part of a text that has nothing to do with schools... it's a premise description for a TV show. The main character has to stay back after school waiting for the bus and waits in the "aula de convivencia". The fact that she waits in this room vs. any other room is important in the story. Any idea what this might be called in English? All I can think of is the "detention hall" but that has a negative connotation (or maybe it just has a negative connotation for me?). She's not being punished, she just has to wait there because there's no other place to wait... Can anyone think of a more neutral term than "detention hall"?

Is it possible to edit a question once you've submitted it? I don't know.

philgoddard Feb 11, 2010:
So the question is "aula de convivencia".

In other words, the new teacher insists on calling it "aula de convivencia" although it is, in essence, a detention hall, but I need a more positive or neutral term... Thanks!!

liz askew Feb 11, 2010:
I thought "convivencia" meant that everybody was trying to get along together in a positive way...so how about "reception area" or something like that...I won't be making any contribution on this one. Cheers!
philgoddard Feb 11, 2010:
So is your question "aula de convivencia" or "aula especial para niños que "presentan dificultades en la convivencia"? And can we have the sentence, perhaps with the ones before and after it?

"Detention room"sounds fine to me.

friendship room

That's what 'aula de convivencia' suggests to me. There's a bit of a fashion for them in British schools, though my own kids' school has just got a 'friendship bench'.

self-improvement room

Found an interesting post in a forum (see below)
Example sentence:

"...I misbehaved badly enough to be sent to in-school suspension, which my middle school called "SIR," for "self-improvement room."

Note from asker:
Thanks lukane! That's definitely more positive...
Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : This is possibly better than Liz's solution because it's such a clumsy euphemism, which I suspect "sala de convivencia" is in Spanish.

remove room

This is what Ofsted and lots of schools call it. It is less pejorative than "exclusion room" which is often used. In the light of the discussion, it might still be too negative, but it is certainly the name it is called in the UK.

I like "exclusion room" it sounds a lot less menacing than "detention hall"... Thanks.
Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : Yes, I agree that we need a euphemism here. It's a detention room, but the teacher can't bring herself to call it that.

conciliation/arbitration or peacemaking room

The fact that she had to wait there does not "involve" her in the activities the room is used for.
Not all schools have one but I guess it is a room where pupils / students and moderators (teacher or another authority) are taken to settle disputes (out of the clasroom to avoid disturbing
discipline or upsetting the learning atmosphere)

resource room

I definitely think that what is being referred to here is different from a detention/exclusion room.

The link below describes a room which is set aside for precisely the same purpose outlined in your explanation: a room where children with behavioral or other difficulties are taken for specialized support. There is one of these in the school my daughter attends (in Spain) and it is, I believe, common practice in many countries now - nothing to do with children misbehaving/being punished and more about keeping children with special needs within mainstream schools.

Resource rooms are classrooms (sometimes smaller classrooms) where a special education program can be delivered to a student with a disability. It is for the student who qualifies for either a special class or regular class placement but needs some special instruction in an individualized or small group setting for a portion of the day. Individual needs are supported in resource rooms as defined by the student's IEP. Sometimes this form of support is called Resource and Withdrawal (or pull out). The child getting this type of support will receive some time in the resource room which refers to the withdrawal portion of the day and some time in the regular classroom with modifications and or accommodations which is the resource support in the regular classroom. This type of support helps ensure that the inclusional model is still in place."
