Spanish term

mujeres captadas en el primer trimestre de embarazo

Spanish to English Social Sciences Medical: Health Care pre-natal care
Porcentaje de partos hospitalarios. Porcentaje de ****mujeres captadas en el primer trimestre de embarazo**** con control prenatal.Porcentaje de mujeres con atención prenatal completa.

In a report on fulfilling Millennium Development Goals for prenatal care in Costa Rica.

I'm ok with the "first trimester of pregnancy", but have included that in the term, in case they go together.

Don't know if I'm missing the obvious (yet again!), or whether it's another way of saying, eg, that all women should undergo ultra-sound scans, or some such thing.

Apologies in advance if this turns out to be nothing more than the obvious! Many thanks

Thanks, ladies (not a man in sight!) for all the really helpful suggestions - both from answerers and peer comments/questions alike. The answers are all fairly similar in meaning, but Patricia's was the first of those that really fitted the bill.

Taña Dalglish Apr 27, 2007:
Yep: But I would say "under doctor's care" during the first three months ... (hope this is what your were asking?) (smile)
Carol Gullidge (asker) Apr 27, 2007:
How about that delightful phrase: "UNDER THE DOCTOR"?!
Taña Dalglish Apr 27, 2007:
Carol: Here we go with the food discussion again, e? (smile)
Carol Gullidge (asker) Apr 27, 2007:
Wow!! Thanks, girls, for all the help. Plenty of nuances to chew over (during lunch...)
Taña Dalglish Apr 27, 2007:
Carol: I too am struggling with the words, but it is the percentage that is "captured" not the women themselves and agree with Patricia's idea (along those lines). TD

...pregnancy right from the earliest possible stage.
Noni Gilbert Riley Apr 27, 2007:
It strikes me as a touch tautologous - if they have control natal, then they have been captadas.... I think Patricia has identified the nuance - they want the get those pregnant ladies in for check-ups, so that there is a medical record of their ...
patricia scott Apr 27, 2007:
English - captada en el primer trimestre as I see it, means that they are subjected to control from the very beginning of the pregnancy.
patricia scott Apr 27, 2007:
There is a nuance - not all women who are pregnant go to a hospital or see a doctor - the "captadas" here seems to indicate these are women who would not normally go to the doctor, have been convinced to do so. (not clear yet how to put this into En
liz askew Apr 27, 2007:
Don't see what's wrong with keeping it simple. "Women who are in the first trimester/three months of pregnancy/women who fall within the first trimester of pregnancy.
Carol Gullidge (asker) Apr 27, 2007:
PS, so far, I'm playing safe with a generalization, eg: women being examined during first trimester...

picked up in the first trimester

"Captadas" gives the impression that the healthcare system actively seeks pregnant women.
Note from asker:
I'm sorry Yasser! I presume you're the only male in attendance, and I somehow missed you! My apologies!

women who were brought in for prenatal/antenatal care during the first trimester

I chose "brought in" thinking that they could be "brought in" by the healthcare system through its campaigns, social workers, nurses, etc.

I agree that "captar" implies actively trying to attract these women to the service.
