Hi all,
Thanks for all of that! I do apologize for fretting like this in public. I was in shock because I felt like as if I was cheated...but then obviously instances like that could occur in any trade or industry.
I have accepted an amended quotation and they are now aware that moving forward, clarification is always needed....

对方要是坚持要用中文字数算的话,就把你的 per English word rate 调整成 per Chinese character rate 报给他。 这没有什么可客气的 - It's all business.
For example, say you charge 10 cents per English word, just convert it to 6.25¢ per Chinese character, and present it back to the PM.

同意你的意见。所以,报价时一定要写清是按译文中的 word 计还是按原文的 character 计。如果本来是想报 6.25¢ per Chinese character,但不经意写成 6.25¢/word,那就很容易被客户误解为(或故意曲解为) 6.25¢/English word。这样一来,吃亏就吃大了。当然,以上报价数字只是为举例方便而已。具体报价数字应根据具体情况而定。
前面 James_xia 的“接单过程要小心‘陷阱’”一帖,我除了不同意按照 Trados 的重复率给折扣外,其它都同意。当然,各人有各人的做法。也可同意按照 matches and repetitions 给折扣,但同时提高总的 rate。
