Speaking of eyesight, I just mistook "免" as "兔" a little while ago this morning. 露了个怯, as you know.

But actually that's because I just got up, and was still bleary-eyed. Also the meaning of "免治"(免痔) just never occurred to me. I thought the term "兔治" was pretty odd myself, but also thought it was some kind of transliteration from another language. Embarrassing indeed.

But back to eyesight, at my age I'm still able to read without any kind of corrective lenses ... knock on wood. It might be genetic, 'cause lots of younger people could not function without reading glasses. I feel especially bad for the news anchors who have to keep futzing with their reading glasses on camera, for instance when they interview someone and have to read from their notes a quote by the person being interviewed.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

BTW, that reminds me of something totally unrelated. It is about English grammar though ...

I was watching the latest episode of "Celebrity Apprentice" the other day. One of the celebrity contestants Cyndi Lauper at one point made the comment, "I feel bad for the other team." Donald Trump immediately jumped in to correct her; "Badly ... You feel badly", he remarked, which Cyndi Lauper quickly accepted in return. The boss is always right, y'know, especially when that boss is Donald Trump.

Actually, she was right and he was wrong.

Here's a link that gives a good explanation as to why ...

Henry,

I'm sorry to have veered off your main topic. But using the phrase "I feel bad (about something)" just reminded me of that incident of Donald Trump incorrectly correcting others. It left quite an impression on me.

I must say it's not everyday that you see people going around correcting other people's grammar, especially when they themselves are wrong.

我是老人,所以做法也老 Apr 30, 2010

到現在還是喜歡買便宜的光碟放在DVD player上直接用電視看.
有不少朋友建議我可以上網下載然後接到電視看,但安裝手續似乎超過了我的理解範圍.
我不喜歡用電腦的"顯示器"看電視劇.那會有"還沒脫離工作"的錯覺.

遗传因素与后天保护 Apr 30, 2010

Steve,

你这种情况确实不多见。下面这篇文章说,“绝大多数的人在40~45岁左右眼睛会悄悄出现‘老花’”,“老花眼是人体健康的第一张‘黄牌’”。
http://www.qqyy.com/jibing/wuguanke/laohuayan/0803/12/9946E20A10772556.html

Yueyin,

多谢. 我确实是很幸运的. 多年上班终日看电脑屏幕, 居然还没怎么影响到我的视力.

我左眼是个 lazy eye, 是小时将脸贴在桌面上学写字的坏习惯造成的(美国 5 岁就上学也不一定是好事). 所以我本也不是 20/20 eyesight. 没想到年纪大了反而不老花. 真可谓塞翁失马.

http://www.lazyeye.org/

Causes of Lazy Eye
Anything that interferes with clear vision in either eye during the critical period (birth to 6 years of age) can cause amblyopia. The most common causes of amblyopia are constant strabismus (constant turn of one eye), anisometropia (different vision/prescriptions in each eye), and/or blockage of an eye due to cataract, trauma, lid droop, etc.

就中和了,因为老花和近视的机制相反,赫赫。
