Like we can call for a considerate, understanding, client who only ever mails when we have time for new jobs, sends a reliable TM terminology list, and arranges a really ideal deadline... Then pays the top rate as soon as the invoice arrives. And NEVER forgets the last 200 words or rewrites a page five minutes after the job was sent to the printer... (Even the best real ones have their glitches or call me with rushed jobs when I'm booked all week. Today I feel that with friends like mine you don... I must admit I feel a bit threatened anyway, as that would eliminate my job. Not to mention a whole marketplace of people whose job is to foster international understanding.

The machine translation alone will not eliminate the translation jobs, as it simply ridiculous. What really may be of danger is the general opinion that MT may be used instead of the professional translation. Many readers nowadays will not care to spend their time on complaining on bad quality translation to the highest authorities, they will just throw the text to the dustbin. And without such complaints, the authorities might keep thinking that everything is going fine with MT...

It may be difficult to believe, but the vocabulary should be restricted to 100 words. "
I think this quasi-mathematical explanation is very reassuring, not to mention the rapidly evolving forces in the institutional language related to what 'politically correct' language means. And this is particularly true in politics and international affairs.
The bureaucrat that thinks MT can substitute human translation might provoke an international conflict. Holy cow!

I encourage all translators with US citizenship write to their congressional representatives strongly supporting US federal involvement in machine translation. If the feds can do for machine translation what they've done for Social Security, Medicade, Medicare, education, and just about everything else they touch, then we'll have nothing to worry about from MT.
Let them work their magic I say.

Even if one translator who would match all news archives of CNN, BBC, NBC, The Times, National Geographic etc. for the last 10 years then he/she will get a TM which will give ... Even if one translator who would match all news archives of CNN, BBC, NBC, The Times, National Geographic etc. for the last 10 years then he/she will get a TM which will give at least 10% match rate with all similar subjects.
In any case they will need human mind but with such initiatives their need will be dropped significantly.
The translation profession can not be terminated by machine translations.
IMHO the technology which will end this profession will never be found by IT industry.
I expect that fundamentals of such technology will be found by Psychologists or by Medical Specialists who develop technologies for disabled persons.
