The above page describes it very well, but if I may add my own contribution, I would say that, for example, a verb displaying a perfective aspect states that the action of the verb was or has been completed. The Arabic tense often known as a past tense was originally really a perfective form - and still is, though perhaps to a slightly lesser extent.

What do you call this tense in Persian, please? I mean the کتب – کتبت- کتبتَ – کتبتِ – کتبتُ tense. (As the dictionary form is کتب kataba I have started with this form, but practice varies quite a lot.)
