This was not a right/wrong answer-everyone's input was helpful and using the 'three different' approach helped me solve the problem.I am giving Philippe the points and would like to say that I am very sorry to see he has left the site. He became a valued colleague within a very short time.

three levels of text are being proposed or planned

Explanation:
please note: a reading is not an interpretation. The French does not say that. This is about a text On Art. So...I doubt even the French meant reading...it means trois textes...sur l'exposition...the French uses lecture to mean the text they have written on the exhibit that they put up on the walls in little text boxes...that's what a lecture is..I believe...

but probably: three readings is good enough..without the levels ...they are probably putting up intro text on the wall of the gallery for a Group of Works...\

neutral  Jane Griffiths (X): I think your proposed translation could work OK, but want to point out that a reading can be an interpretation. Shorter OED (definition 8 out of 9 given for 'reading', but it's in there): 'The interpretation or meaning one attaches to something ...'

three different layers (levels) of presentation materials

Explanation:
presentation materials targeted to three different audiences
targeting of different content to different audiences
three different content presentation materials
three different levels of detail
Different layers and levels of information should be presented in ways defined by the exhibit’s purpose, the intrinsic complexity of the material, and the amount of time visitors need to absorb them.

the exhibit will be pitched at 3 different levels

Explanation:
might get you round the problem. That way you don't have to be specific about whether it is a question of interpretation or 3 different levels of accompanying text (rather a brave/rash extrapolation....)

The verb \"to read\" can be used of paintings as well as books. I would certainly say \"how do you read that picture?\" or indeed \"how do you read that sculpture?\", when visiting a gallery with a friend. Very quietly, of course...

http://www.baacorsham.co.uk/mkidner/sandler.htm
http://www.thamesandhudson.com/books/How_to_Read_a_Painting/...

By extension of that use of \'to read\', one can also read an exhibit: http://www.art.man.ac.uk/DRAMA/ahrb/mainreport.pdf

It does depend on what sort of exhibit this refers to, though. This could be ambiguous. That wouldn\'t always be a problem - it depends on the exhibit.
