English term or phrase: dissmell

Embarrassment, shame, humiliation, and mortification are each about loss of value, while contempt, disgust, dissmell (noticing a “stinker”), loathing, ridicule, and bullying are about efforts to devalue another.

Grazie di cuore per ogni suggerimento!

Italian translation:ripugnanza/schifo
Explanation:

Dissmell: The avoidance signal

Inherently punishing

Dissmell is another auxiliary of the hunger drive, but this is an impulse to pull away from or push away a noxious item that shouldn’t be ingested such as dead animals, fresh feces, or sour milk. It functions as an affect when non-food items or people are kept at a distance. Tomkins created this word to capture the biological response of repulsion. When dissmell is combined with anger, we call it contempt. Dissmell appears on the face as the head pulled back, the upper lip raised, nose wrinkled and inner eyebrows lower.

Dissmell is a made-up word—a neologism coined by Tomkins, for which he apologized! It refers to the characteristic way in which an infant reacts to odors that smell bad to her: She wrinkles her nose and raises and turns her head away.
