Trata-se de um relato de uma mãe viajando com uma criança com condições especiais. No caso, "(algo) era um parto" é uma expressão que mostra o quão difícil de ser feita é aquela coisa; uma coisa dolorosa, trabalhosa.

A frase completa é esta: "Lembro-me que eu tinha levado daqui do Brasil um atestado médico, devidamente traduzido, explicando o quadro médico do meu filho, daí porque meu cunhado me acompanhou até a entrada do parque e ao setor no qual poderíamos buscar um ingresso especial, pois ficar em filas naquela época, era realmente “um parto” para nós e, em esperas, tudo (e literalmente tudo) podia acontecer."

Não consigo encontrar uma expressão em inglês que traduza, apesar de o sentido da coisa ser facilmente explicado na tradução.
