English term

player

Non-PRO English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters player
He was a player. He used to hide out in the bushes and help his friends get dates.

They are talking about Cyrano de Bergerac and what he was doing. I found that "player" could mean the person "who feeds on people to get them into a relationship". Is that the meaning of "player" here? although, it is already mentioned in the last part of the sentence.

I know the other meanings of "player", like the guy who talks to many girls in the same time, but it doesn't seem fit to the context here.

They are talking about the person itself, not the play.

But the hero of Cyrano de Bergerac is a complex character.
While he is the personification of chivalry, courage and
poetry, he also epitomizes poverty, worldly failure and
ugliness. Because his nose is abnormally large and grotesque,
Cyrano is burdened with a sense of inferiority that adversely
affects his relationships and ultimately shapes his life. Still he
learns to live with his unattractive outward appearance and
even feel affectionate toward the nose he believes no woman
could ever love.

@ Sjaatoul Once again, a total lack of context! Is "He was a player. He used to hide out in the bushes and help his friends get dates" your interpretation, or what your text actually says? And what more does it say? What this suggests is far from a "player" in the traditional sense as Cyrano was in fact very overcome by his appearance (an unusually large nose). So we need more from you to explain what you understand as well!!!

Cyrano befriends the young man, who is in Cyrano's guardsmen unit, and discovers that he is infatuated with Roxane, but is too inept with words to woo her. To help him, Cyrano composes Christian's love letters to Roxane, which she finds irresistible. Later, Christian decides he wants no more help and tries to speak to Roxane face to face, but fails miserably and she re-enters her house in an angry huff. ****Cyrano, hiding in the bushes, comes to his rescue,**** but this time by imitating Christian's voice and speaking to Roxane from under her balcony. He is so eloquent that he (unintentionally) wins a kiss for Christian from Roxane.
Lisa Rosengard May 17, 2020:
player It looks like your definition of 'player' is OK in that sentence until you wrote 'feeds on people', like an accusation. Your character there might be a bit unusual, hidden in a forest, or looking for a game to play... ?

matchmaker

The word that comes to mind for "player" is "matchmaker" (Bergerac, being so eloquent, imitated Christian voice from the bushes, thus winning a kiss from Roxane, really the love of Bergerac's life).

Like a modern-day Cyrano de Bergerac with the bubbly cadence of Reese Witherspoon, Golden spends her days swiping, heart-ing, and messaging flirty one-liners on behalf of her single clients. Sitting at her headquarters — the large oak dining table in her classically decorated apartment — she showed me a folder on her iPhone home screen titled “WORK.” Inside, there are a dozen dating apps, like Bumble, The League, JSwipe, and OkCupid. Golden logs in and out of all of them throughout each day, finding her clients appropriate matches and setting up first dates.

Even more reason why I liken the term to a "matchmaker".

Martin plays C.D. Bales, the fire chief of the small town in British Columbia who has a big heart and an even larger nose. When he first meet him – in a clever bit of mirroring the original play’s opening swordfight – he’s using a tennis racket to spar with a couple of inebriated sportsmen who have mocked his distended snout. A witty and erudite fellow, Bales is immediately smitten with a beautiful astronomy graduate Roxanne Kowalski (Daryl Hannah) who has taken up temporary residence while she awaits a new comet to pass by. Unfortunately for Bales, Roxanne already has her eyes on the handsome new fire instructor, who is himself infatuated with her. Bales reluctantly finds himself having to play ****mysterious matchmaker*** between the two, while his heart achingly yearns for Roxanne.

agree philgoddard : Intermediary works, but not personification. I think the idea is that he does it for his own amusement.

strategist

Hi. According to the context and what it means, I think it refers to a strategic person, a strategist.
A strategist is a person with responsibility for the formulation and implementation of a strategy. Strategy generally involves setting goals, determining actions to achieve the goals, and mobilizing resources to execute the actions. A strategy describes how the ends (goals) will be achieved by the means (resources).

active participant

He took an active part in helping his friend. A player is someone who makes the moves.
Example sentence:

She was an active player in the management buy-out

He was a player, he didn't take a back seat.

Peer comment(s):

agree Tina Vonhof (X) : Since there is no source sentence to go by, this would be a neutral/safe answer; it represents the meaning without interpretation.

agree Yvonne Gallagher : quite simply. "He took an active part in helping his friend"

team player

I think this means "team player" here: a member of a group who tries to do what is good for the group rather than what is good for just himself or herself

So he's willing to help his friends get what he can't get for himself.
