По контексту мне кажется, что можно перевести и просто как “новое поле деятельности”. Суть в том, что многие компании сталкиваются с трудностями и вынуждены активно бороться за успех, когда пытаются открыть для себя новое поле деятельности, т.е. заниматься коммерцией в той сфере, которая значительно далека от их основного бизнеса и находится за пределами их компетенции.
