English term

Potentiel Earth

English to French Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng PE Potentiel Earth
Le client m'a donné les informations suivantes: PE stands for Potential Earth - earth Ground point in an electrical circuit.
Any ideas?

HERBET Abel Jul 30, 2016:
Johannes Gleim Jul 30, 2016:
@ Didier I can underline your posting. I never heard of "potentiel earth".
Didier Fourcot Jul 26, 2016:
Protective Earth The usual meaning of PE in this context (name of a terminal or lead), as opposed to signal earth, machine ground, etc

"Terre de protection" in French

IMHO with due respect to your customer, "potential earth" is meaningless in English

neutral Johannes Gleim : 'terre' = 'earth'. PE = 'Protective Earth'. See discussion. // 'PE' is IEC terminology, see Electropedia. 'GRD' (ground) or 'equipment grounding conductor' is US terminology, see your link.

any earthing system is protective, by definition. PE is just the US terminology. Nothing more. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthing_system

Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : Yes, but that would translate 'earth potential', which is NOT what is being described here.

PE

'PE' is the international standard abbreviation used across all languages.

I actually think the source text is mistaken here (perhaps influenced by the FR customer?), as PE normally and logically stands for 'protective earth'; moreover, the FR spelling 'potentiel' is not used in EN! It sounds like your customer believes is means 'potential de la terre' > 'earth potential', but this is not a correct interpretation of the abbreviation 'PE' in EN (EN word order would in that case require it to be 'EP')

So I would suggest you avoid the issue simply by using 'PE' on its own, without the incorrect explanation in brackets; otherwise, you will be obliged to change the explanation to be something like 'mise à la terre de protection', which has little to do with the actual source term used here!

agree Herbie : I don't understand all the more or less unqualified attempts of the others here. You (as well as Didier) are the only one looking through.

(point de) mise à la potentiel

How is Potential Earth (earth Ground point in an electrical circuit) abbreviated? PE stands for Potential Earth (earth Ground point in an electrical circuit).

disagree Tony M : A avlid term; but nothing to do with the term being asked here.

As Tony already stated, PE stands for a different item. It's the earthed conductor having zero potential.

If a fault within an electrical device connects a live supply conductor to an exposed conductive surface, anyone touching it while electrically connected to the earth will complete a circuit back to the earthed supply conductor and receive an electric shock.

A protective earth (PE), known as an equipment grounding conductor in the US National Electrical Code, avoids this hazard by keeping the exposed conductive surfaces of a device at earth potential.
