German term

Judenhasser

German to English Social Sciences Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
Brief bio of a scientist persecuted during the NS period.
"Unmittelbar nach dem Inkrafttreten des Gesetzes zur Wiederherstellung des Berufsbeamtentums, wurde sie aus rassistischen Gründen von Prof. Dr. Victor Schilling fristlos zum 30. Juni 1933 gekündigt. Dieser war stellvertretender Direktor, bekannt als *Judenhasser*, und Gründer der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Hämatologie und Medizinische Onkologie"
Am vascilating between "Anti-Semite" and "Jew-hater". Given the serious context of those persecuted during the Nazi period I find the latter more in keeping with reality, the former not having quite the same punch. Still, perhaps this goes too far?
Other suggestions are appreciated. TIA for your input.

Horst Huber (X) Jun 16, 2015:
With "anti-semite" you seem to be still on the level of ideology, with "Judenhass" emotions and personal animosity seem to be involved. My adjective with"anti-semite" might be "virulent"?
Ellen Zittinger Jun 15, 2015:
anti-semite
philgoddard Jun 15, 2015:
Hyphens don't serve any purpose in phrases like these, since you can see that the words belong together. They're used to resolve ambiguity, as in "a Jew-hating Arab".
Lancashireman Jun 15, 2015:
To hyphenate or not to hyphenate? Cricket lover, tea drinker, noise hater OR cricket-lover, tea-drinker, noise-hater?
Lancashireman Jun 15, 2015:
A synonym: Jud[a]eophobe

jew-hater

I agree with you. Since the word anti-Semitismus exists, I don't see why you should use anything other than "jew-hater."

I meant to capitalize Jew. As to hyphens -- the scourge of the English language -- I prefer this one with the hyphen, since to my mind, it locks the two words together with more ruthlessness, and therefore is the more shocking. Grammar rule books are not of much use when it comes to hyphens. However, Jonathan will undoubtedly have his own preference.

Many thanks.

agree philgoddard : Jew hater.

agree Eleanore Strauss : ditto... hyphen only as adjective - actually, the term anti-semite has become the most commonly used term.. I guess it sounds a bit more 'elegant'

agree Kirsten Bodart : This is probably the best option. Anti-Semite wouldn't quite cover the base of 'Judenhasser' and how terrible it sounds. It'd need an adjective like 'vicious' or something to really work with the same awful ring to it.
