From a (recent) brief and formal letter of congratulation:

"Sehr geehrter XX, Ich habe zur Kenntnis erhalten, dass Sie ehrenvoll in die United States Naval Academy aufgenommen wurden.
Ich gratuliere Ihnen ganz herzlich."

So presumably he has been awarded a place at the United States Naval Academy - but what is one supposed to understand by "ehrenvoll"?

@Armorel That's what I wondered, too. Also whether there was some kind of honorable admission at a later career stage, without studying there, but I can't see any mention of that on their website.

I'm with Helen entirely - if the letter is written by/for someone English, then it will be "honour", regardless of US usage.

Thanks, Helen - I like your suggestion. I guess the question at the back of my mind was whether "ehrenvoll aufgenommen" corresponds to some formal category of admission (a bit like "graduating with honours"), but if this isn't the case then your rendering will do very well.

@Donald Depends on the writer actually. And/or the audience. But I am EN so write 'honour'. We all know the US spelling differs. I'm sure Armorel is up to getting it right for her translation.

@Armorel In case it helps, from what I've read this morning, candidates are first nominated for admission and then admitted. As to 'ehrenvoll', I suppose it means 'honorably' here, but how to render that in EN, I'm not sure. 'You have the honour of being admitted' ??

I suppose it is the writer's intent to affirm the candiate's right/worth to be admitted.
