Note the date on which this was publshed: 1932, at the height of the Fascist period when everything published about the arts was controlled by the regime, and when it was considered "politically desirable" to write in this intentionally rude manner. The work of Ugo Ojetti, for example, one of many such critics of that time who I've translated, is full of deliberately scathing put-downs. So it would be a mistake if the translator tried to smooth out this intentional roughness. Hence my suggestion. |
