axons, action potential
An action potential starts when an axon becomes stimulated enough to cause a localised part of its membrane to ‘swap’ charges – i.e. the outside now becomes negative relative to a positive inside. This happens because at this part of the membrane, the ***‘gates’*** that keep the positive ions on the outside of the neuron suddenly open, allowing the positive ions to flood in.
This is a pharmaceutical manual that - among other things - explains how neurons work. I have found translations for "gate" stemming from electronics ("Gate" or "Gatter") but don't know which term is used in biology ...
Hope you can help :)

Tor
