And proceeds to explain about handwritten notes that were archived.
I can't share much more than that due to confidentiality reasons but hoping someone has come across this phrase before.

Thanks, Helen. I once overheard a comment saying that somebody’s notebook looked like a chicken had walked over it. The chicken connotation has been stuck in my head ever since.

I don’t have to rely on that comment to back up my entry. That’s just a personal experience that made the connotation immediately understandable to me. The North American usage is not based on any German ideas. See added note
