French term

Cherchent combines pour gdes marques - chères

French to English Marketing Marketing
Can anyone tell me what "combines" means in this context? My dictionary gives "trick" and "scheme" for "combine", but I don't really understand what the author's trying to say here.
Thanks in advance.

Dans leur rapport aux produits & aux marques, les jeunes cherchent avant tout un échange d’égal à égal & s’approprient plus facilement l’image de marques satisfaisant leurs besoins physiologiques & matériels (alimentation, services) au détriment des produits & marques répondant à des besoins d’estime (luxe, élégance, plaisir, mode, sport)

Discussion

Lorraine Dubuc Nov 10, 2013:
'combines' comporte un certain élément péjoratif comparé à 'tricks' qui est davantage l'équivalent de ruse, être malin. MHA
polyglot45 Nov 10, 2013:
exactly - the dash is a minus sign - chères = moins chères - they are always looking for clever ways of getting luxury goods at bargain prices. Or even - at bargain basement prices
Sonia Geerlings Nov 10, 2013:
deals and means deals and means (of getting big-name brands cheaper)
------
Special deals but also other means of shopping, like websites that flog luxury brands to get rid of excess stock from other markets, etc. (Here in Australia we often get flooded with fragrances from the American market whose original price is lower than in Oz. The local sellers hate this, but for the consumer, it's great.)
Emiliano Pantoja Nov 10, 2013:
combines - combinaisons I understand it in line with Tony's approach, but "clever technique" doesn't seem to fit well. I think they mean they look for special offers (combinaisons: soldes, moitié prix) when it comes to buying expensive goods. They are not willing to buy those goods at the normal market price.
Tony M Nov 10, 2013:
combines I don't think 'trick' is really the right word — it really means 'clever techniques for...' — and do note that I'm pretty sure it means "clever techniques for getting big-name brands cheaper" (i.e. not fakes) — I think you'll find that's actually '– chères' = 'moins chères' = 'more cheaply'
Lorraine Dubuc Nov 9, 2013:
Trick is the proper use I think. Looking for tricks for popular brand names- (that are) expensive. Presumably they are looking for ways to get bargain price for prestigious labels or even buy on a black market? For example, we saw Gucci look-alike purses and accessories made in China that got very popular in the past years.

agree Tony M : Yes, though I'd prefer 'big-name brand' to 'designer'

yes, that's the idea - my personal options would be rather "ironical", but if I used them it would no longer be a translation ... Thanks!
