I am translating a book on Brazilian Birds here and I was wondering in this context if perhaps these two terms are differentiated? Normally in literal terms I would distinguish them by using `crest` and ` quiff` and would like to know from any ornathological experts if these same two terms can be used or do they just use ` crest`?
Strictly speaking there is a difference to me, as a quiff/topete is definetely some sort of plumage at the very top of the head, whereas a crista/crest is a sort of raised plumage (like a smal hackle) which can run from the top of the head down the neck to the upper back.
My question is, in ornathology, are these two terms used, or just a general term of ` crest`??

However, although the word "quiff" is usually" used in a hair context, I would use it to refer to the feather crest style, as in the context below.

Yes, crest is the generic term. I would use both terms though, depending on the context. I would not hesitate to use "quiff" in a more literary context. Can you provide further context?

| Marlene thks! Would you say then that where u see topete read quiff, and where you see crista to use crest? My doubt is/was that in my research I dont see the word quiff being used in ornithology so much, they appear to use crest as a sort of generic term? |
