I imagine there is a set phrase—something akin to "research questions" but not quite.

those research statements derived from the theses aren't still not proved yet. That's why they subject to be submitted then proposed for defense.

the pronoun"they" from above note means the theses that must be defended in almost cases. In other word, one must defend their theses because of unproved research statements derived from the theses.
