Greetings,
Another discrepancy between the one-volume Āryānpur Progressive Persian-English Dictionary and what a friend says.
According to my friend, گيرانداختن is a synonym of لو دادن. Is this correct, please?
If he is right, ‘to inform on a friend’ will be:
رفيق خود را گيرانداختن/لو دادن
However, the one-volume Āryānpur Progressive Persian-English Dictionary gives the meaning گيرانداختن as ‘to catch’. This is crucial, as in this case a citizen doesn't ‘گيرانداختن’ a friend but rather ‘لو دادن’ him, as a result of which the police ‘گيرانداختن’ him!
Best wishes, and many thanks,
Simon

I prefer the explanation you provided by Aryanpoor.
For example I disclose لو دادن your location and you get caught گیر افتادن.

entangle/get sb into trouble
It can sometimes be synonymous with به دردسر انداختن.
"to get into trouble" can also mean "to get caught".

Discussion
For example:
رفیقش لوش داد. رفیقش گیرش انداخت. But لو دادن is more frequent.
And لو دادن can be used in place of فاش کردن in some contexts (meaning to give away a secret).
For example:
طرف همه چی رو لو داد. طرف همه چی رو فاش کرد.
The difference between لو دادن and فاش کردن can be said to be in the formality of the text, as فاش کردن is a bit more formal.
And گیر انداختن can be used in the sense of catching sb.
for example: بالاخره تنها گیرت انداختم!
Finally I should say that گیر انداختن is one of those terms which can have two (or more) equivalents in TL. The process is known as Split in cross-linguistic influence.
