madrone
It's a particular kind of strawberry tree, Arbutus menziesii/. I know it really well.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arbutus_menziesii

Note that it is also called 'Madroño' in English. However, madrone is much more common.

'Madrone' is an anglicization of "Madroño", so I think it's clearly the answer to the question.
The tree in question may not be Arbutus menziesii, which is a Western Hemisphere native, but that's beside the point, IMO. It is a common name for several trees of the genus Arbutus.
Below is a list of the common strawberry trees (genus Arbutus) that grow in western North America. The first three grow well in Southern California. I am a landscape designer and I have used the first three in my designs but growers do not recommend the Madrone for our climate. The common names given below
Arbutus unedo - Strawberry Tree
Arbutus unedo 'compacta' - Compact Strawberry Tree
Arbutus x 'Marina' - Arbutus Marina, or Marina Strawberry Tree
Arbutus menziesii - Madrone

--------------------------------------------------
P.S. There are 14 species in the genus Arbutus.

arbutus fruit
The tree is known as the arbutus, or the strawberry tree, in reference to the appearance of the fruit.

Rachel points out that arbutus berry is possibly more common - I certainly have always known them as the fruits, but every family is a world unto itself and google certainly points to berry being more common.
