Spanish term

perlas corneas

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) Microscopic findings
This is a microscopic study of tissue from the tongue base. I could not find anything about "perlas corneas" - nor did I expect to, because the site is not near the eye. Could it be keratin pearls? That's quite a stretch. If so, how would I show that? How would it be to write: 'corneal [sic - keratin?] pearls' ?

Context:

Thanks, everyone! It's all clear to me now. I appreciate all your contributions and I will never forget the translation of "perlas corneas" again!

If I were you I would put "keratin pearls", FWIW.

Muriel Vasconcellos (asker) Mar 9, 2011:
How to represent this? THanks for confirming my suspicions. I was hoping someone would suggest how to represent this, because it's so different from what the Spanish says. I didn't make myself clear in my question - I did find a few references to corneal pearls, but none that were not in relation to the eye. Should I say 'keratin' and forget about 'corneal'?

IMO, here "corneal" refers more generally to the epithelium, not the eye's layer. ( http://www.google.it/search?num=20&hl=it&newwindow=1&q="corn... )

@ Muriel: my first reference *does* refer to the tongue. See this excerpt:

"MATERIAL AND METHODS
Eighteen cases of biopsy specimens taken
from ***tongue squamous cell carcinoma*** were
selected from files of the Pathology Service of
Santa Maria University Hospital (HUSM). The
sample was divided into three distinct groups
according to the histopathological grading
proposed by Wahi,2 with six cases in each group.
Such score was carried by Hematoxylin and
Eosin (H/E) stained sections observing the
following criteria:
- GRADE 1: ***numerous corneal pearls***,
important cell keratinization with intercellular
bridges, less than 2 mitoses per field when
observed under microscope with increased
magnification, rare atypical mitoses, sparse
multinucleated giant cells, reduced cellular and
nuclear pleomorphism;"

Then, liz askew's references fully confirm "horn/keratin" as being the correct translations, but my reference was not off-topic :)
Note from asker:
The only reference I could find to 'corneal pearls' had to do with the eye, and this is on the tongue.
