Italian term

in mattonella

Italian to English Other Food & Drink
From a list of frozen foods:

e.g.

preparato per risotto in mattonella

vongole sgusiate in mattonella

Having a problem with this term as I simply don't know what it means!

Risotto in mattonella Ivana, this is the first time that I hear of it, but I think it refers to the shape, so it is a sort of brick-shaped pie (sformato a forma di mattone o mattonella) i.m.h.o.

Hi Ivana, yes, I realise that now - I suppose it was seeing the refs. below that made me think that!

Risotto/spaghetti alla marinara I had spaghetti alla marinara at a girlfriend's house the other day, made with a block of frozen seafood. She added a little pink pepper, a dash of home-made tomato sauce and some fresh tomato, diced. It was out of this world!
Ivana UK (asker) Aug 26, 2010:
Hi Rachel, I think it's just the fish that can frozen - not seen there here (haven't really looked) but in Italy you can buy special packs of frozen seafood ready to make risotto or spaghetti (e.g. spaghetti alla marinara). I have bought frozen paella before though and it wasn't too bad - just a bit tasteless!
Rachel Fell Aug 26, 2010:
Oh dear... can risotto really be frozen -? Wouldn't have thought so, but will have a look next time in Waitrose! :-( http://www.jamieoliver.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=251185

brick-shape

What they mean is the risotto or other product is frozen in a brick shape, as in this picture:

@Ivana: yes, block-frozen sounds perfect
Note from asker:
Ah, so block-frozen basically? Thanks to both of you for your help
Peer comment(s):

agree Mr Murray (X) : I'd use 'bricks' or 'blocks' - no shaped/shaped.
