This is "economicità" in the sense of the "profit and loss account / income statement" of a company, and not in the sense of economics in general. You pay tax on your profit shown on your income statement (the "bottom line" or the line before tax is deducted) .
Basically in Italy, the tax people say that for example if you have a shop and sell food, you should sell food at twice what you pay for it, otherwise you cannot hope to make a profit and they call this "antieconomicità" if you sell at unprofitable prices.
They argue that your accounts can't be accurate and that you have declared an artificially low profit to avoid paying tax on it (i famigerati studi di settore). I don't think there is an equivalent in US or UK tax law for this.

In other uses of the word, I would probably rephrase the sentence with with something like "it was not profitable", depending on the case.

The points are gone now, but the point of the argument is more important.
If you take a good look at the hits on Simon's Google, you will see that "economic" fills a huge range of macro-economic and micro-economic meanings, while here the focus is the very specific one of the "conto *economico*" and the profit margin, which the word "economico" does have in Italian, but which "economic" doesn't.
