"Maintien de la propreté grasse du conditionnement"

I can see that it's something to do with keeping the packaging clean, but I'm not sure where fat comes into it!! I wondered if it was a typo for "graisse" - but then further down, the document says:

"La propreté grasse est à la charge du FOURNISSEUR."

Your assistance would be most gratefully received!

@ Chris But since 'propreté' is fem., why should it not be the f. agreement with that? OK, 'greasy cleanliness' seems like a contradiction in terms (though let's also remember that 'gras' can just mean sticky, etc.) — but I don't imagine for a minute it is referring to the cleanliness of the grease. I suspect this is probably in fact a set expression..

Grasse Apart from its being the perfume centre of France or a bold typeface, this does seem to be a typo unless it's a meaning of grasse that I'm not aware of (not for the first time...). On the other hand it is clearly (?) the feminine form of gras, and you would expect it to have said "propreté de la graisse", so the jury's still out..... I don't think propreté is a typo, so "cleanliness" gets my vote.

Could be, but... That's just what I thought, Tony. However, the document mentions those sorts of protection further down, and goes into some detail about the oils which should be used. I am really beginning to think that there is a typo here - "grasse" should maybe be "graisse". It's such a short section in the document. Perhaps "grease-free" might work here somehow....

Just a thought... Might this be referring to the kind of parts that are coated in grease when packed, to prevent rusting in storage? Although the outside of the pack is of course clean, I could understand why it might be important to look after the packaging in such a way that it doesn't leak and/or lose its grease...

Hello,

This might be a form of grease lubrication to prevent parts from rubbing together, etc

I believe that "graisse" et "grasse" could both be used here.

You could just say "keeping packages clean of grease", but English sometimes can be more wordy and specific than the French in such instructions.

Hi Matthew - many thanks. I decided to go with the other suggestion, as it seems to be a term that's used here in the UK (albeit a strange one - grease + cleanliness - sounds like a contradiction in terms to me!!). I appreciate the time you took to answer, though - cheers!
