ingeniero: Думаю, "то есть" здесь не совсем к месту, этот союз предполагает разъяснение ранее сказанного, в то время как "thus" указывает на определенную причинно-следственную связь (поэтому, таким образом, как следствие...).+ИМО, "т.е." по как раз меняет смысл.

верхние стержни (или что-то там) в пучке стремятся "развалиться", "разойтись" (в форме веера), ПОЭТОМУ верхние стержни попадают между нижними. Для предотвращения этого предусмотрен какой-то ступенчатый вал...
Здесь "to compare" имеет смысл" расположить рядом, параллельно!
