Grazie. Condivido , almeno la gloria se non il punteggio, con Cynthia che aveva usato, sia pur in modo leggermente diverso, la parola "convenevoli". Sottolineo che ho inviato la mia proposta pensando di aiutare con una variante, non certo per fare incetta di punteggio e mi auguro che in tal modo sia stato inteso. :))

here (and this is my supposition, as I have NOT in fact read the entire book!) the author is referring more to the polite "social chit-chat" sometimes "necessary" in certain situations, and less to actual gossip... Not quite the same as "gossip" (although sometimes that chit chat does indeed tend to take the form of gossip!).
