Could you help me? I can't pick out smth good, "to get inside the character" or "personify" seems unemotional.

The context:

.. la première chanson, qui nous parle d'une "cité des anges" et à travers laquelle Mr X se plait à *épouser le personnage* qu'il nomme "the devil" avec un passage où sa voix mue en faveur de celui "auquel vous ne pourrez échapper".
