On a technical institute diploma, the candidate is awarded with the title:
"T.M. Capitani - Perito Trasporto Marittimo"
Can anyone suggest how to translate capitani in this context? Is "Captains" appropriate?

Shipmasters
As per ref. posted by Elena, TM stands for Trasporto Marittimo (merchant marine/navy), but I think the word you are looking for here is shipmasters.

Well, thanks John. Glad my answer could help you, for a change... Thanks for the updated vocab. Even Italian seems to have evolved in time. Have a nice day, Barbara

Comment: "This answer was spot on, although it is in fact obsolete terminology (and is often described as "ex indirizzo capitani"). The new terminology is "perito per il trasporto marittimo""

Captains
"capitani" e' il nome dell'indirizzo di studio, come veniva utilizzato in passato, vedi il sito dell'ist. tec. nautico di trieste
Note from asker:
Allora il titolo conferito sarebbe "Captain of maritime transport"? |
