The judge has just finished describing the range of penalties for a certain offense (a fine from $25.00 to $100.00 and/or a jail sentence of between 10 and 30 days). She asks the defendant, "Do you understand the possible range of penalties?" "Gama" and "rango" just don't sound right to me. Any suggestions? Even a different way of asking the question would be fine.

Explanation:
Las penas van de...a fine from $25.00 to $100.00 and/or a jail sentence of between 10 and 30 days)....esa es una amplitud. La palabra gama la veo muy correcta solo que cuando es una gama uno puede elegir, en este caso uno no elige, es el juez el que elige. Puede decirse tambien que las panas van de XXX a XXX...y el juez pergunt entendio la amplitud de las penas o de cuanto a cuanto van las penas...

Ya que realmente no se refiere a una escala de "x" a "x" de una sola pena o sanción, sino de dos diferentes, yo recomendaría que se tradujera así:

"Gama" no me parece mal, pero en tu contexto, creo que estas sugerencias podrían caber sin desmedro. Lo que hace la jueza es precisamente enumerar las sanciones aplicables a la infracción/delito de que se trata.

Gracias por tu comentario, leyendo de nuevo el texto fuente veo tu punto de vista, y mi error, que fue tomar "tipos" de sanciones cuando se trata de "intensidad" de sanciones; así que la solución de Patri "escala penal" es muy acertada.

Asker: No, pues, no hay tal lista (sobre todo tratandose de un solo cargo.) La juez quiere decir que puede imponerle al acusado cualquier cantitad de multa o cualquier período de cárcel entre esos dos límites (ENTRE $25.00 y $100.00 y ENTRE 10 y 30 días de cárcel). Quiere saber si el acusado comprende eso.
