French term

Pierres apparentes

French to English Other Architecture
And me again but that should be the last question for today ;-)

"Facades sud et nord restaurées en pierres apparentes"

I guess there´s a specific term in English but I just can´t find it - or do you simply keep the French form, since it´s quite typical for the south ?
Thanks :-) !!!

Anne Diamantidis (asker) Apr 17, 2007:
You´re right Glen ! :-) But well, you know French people, always proud ! :p and since I come from the south of France...;-)
Glen McCulley Apr 17, 2007:
quite typical for most of France actually - they generally highlight 'pierres apparentes' either i) to sell, or ii) in regions (such as the south) where previous rampant housing trends have tended to mask exposed stone.

exposed stonework

Over many years involvement with translating property ads and other property marketing documents, this is what I have found time and again to be the most elegant solution.

Just 'stone' on its own can work too, of course, but somehow seems to be seeling it short, unless, of course, space is at a premium.

But I feel that 'stonework' has just the right feel to it: "Oh, just look at the lovely stonework, dear!"
Note from asker:
I like - no I love the sound of that !!!!!!!
Peer comment(s):

agree Martin Cassell : 's good, too: as you say, this would emphasise the character rather than the technical aspect.

agree Simon Mountifield : Yepp, that's what I've got in my house (inside and out), and hard work it is too (scraping out the old mud and applying a lime cement mixture). Seems to be all the rage at the moment in my village...

Thanks, Supersim! Yes, mine too, though I haven't yet had the courage to tackle it, and probably won't before either it falls down, or I die!

Note from asker:
You´re right, I found a lot of "exposed stone" ;-)
Peer comment(s):

agree Glen McCulley : i'd've said exposed stone, but 'natural exposed stone' could also do the trick

agree Lidija Lazic : c'est ce que j'ai trouvé aussi
12 mins
agree Martin Cassell : 's good too: I inclined towards "natural" because "exposed" puts me in mind of interiors, not exteriors, and the context seems to be about exteriors.
15 mins
hmm good point
agree Christopher Crockett : This seems to be the phrase. Presumably "exposed" as opposed to, say, covered with stucco?

Stone

quite simply. Check a few ghits starting with keywords "properties in france" which will take you to plenty of houses to choose from.
Note from asker:
well yes...but since the aim is to sell the house, "stone" alone sounds quite "sad" ! Thanks for your answer Charles ! I wish you a very nice day ;-)
Peer comment(s):

agree Glen McCulley : as well (it being understood that 'stone' means exposed stone...

Thanks, Glen
agree Tony M : Often all that is needed, though the FR love to make the distinction; in my book, if it's stone it means it is visible, otherwise if it is 'rendered', it isn't 'stone'

Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : I would avaoid 'natural stone', as this introduces an ambiguity; both 'pierre de pays' and 'pierre de taille' can be 'exposed', but the latter is less comfortable described as 'natural'
39 mins
fair point Tony. However my feeling was that English usage is less discriminating, and "natural" came to mind for exteriors, as in this case, whereas "exposed" kicked off associations of interiors (as in beams, stone, brick): possibly just me, I suppose.
neutral Charles Hawtrey (X) : The difficulty with 'natural' is also that the reader could well start thinking of 'synthetic' or 'composite' IMO. Cf. types of marble etc. floor tiles.

also a fair point, Charles. I'll get m' coat now, shall I? ;-)
