Just curious: I have come across this term recently for Amsterdam, for example, and am wondering what it means. The first part, 'Gracht-' doesn't offer me any clues, although I think it has something to do with 'Pracht', perhaps?

This is not a points question, I'm just curious...

Canals -- of course! Silly me. I found Grachten after all.

canal city/town

Grachten are canals (a canal network) - a characteristic feature of Amsterdam. The term is predominantly used in relation to Dutch cities/towns. See reference below.

Canal town

"Gracht" is another term for "Kanal" (channel, canal)

The ring of canals (Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht, Prinsengracht; Dutch "gracht" means "canal") is the location of approx. 2,200 buildings, 1,550 of which are listed as historic buildings.

By the way, the German equivalent is "Graben", which corresponds to ditch or trench (deep)

Both picturesque and sophisticated, Europe's grooviest canal town delivers many of its Dutch treats for surprisingly little.
