: Saying that there is much to be said for something implies that it is a good idea e.g. "There is much to be said for not going to the meeting, as it will be boring" - it doesn't work in a negative context like this one.

Just an alternative. Strictly speaking, of course, it diverges a tad from the original - but the (reported) message is the same and is a common enough phrase in this context.
Other possibilities - depending on the context (!):
- Underlying issues/The facts/background (would seem to) imply/indicate that ...
