vertente

I'm not sure I understand what they mean by "vertente" in this context. Thanks.

(included) studies in OR study arm?

I'm not happy with "study arm" because it's often used to refer to the groups being tested rather than the overall subject of the research. Failing anything better, one solution would be to say, in the first example, "also included studies in experimental animals."

branch / offshoot

From the context it has to be something like this. In English I would change it to something like area or division.
Doctor's are terrible writers and I think this is an invention from verter which can mean brotar.
Good luck!

component

i.e. research component, in your text.

"Vertente" is one of those unusual Portuguese words that can go many ways in English. Essentially/conceptually it means offshoot or sub-part.

Here, I think component works well as a nice, neutral word meaning aspect, area, branch, feature or element.

Good luck!
