Dear luskie, Thank you very much for your comment.
Non-ProZ.com Apr 24, 2005:
Dear Sigrid and Ilaria, This is how I have translated the sentence: Many articles have been written about paper dictionaries, but these articles have been of no avail. (This means they have not produced results. The text claims that nowadays people are not interested in paper dictionaries. They prefer using online dictionaries/glossaries. The articles appeared in newspapers and magazines, but the sales of paper dictionaries kept decreasing).
luskie Apr 22, 2005:
Pnina, "si sono sprecati" is very bad italian for "sono stati sprecati"...
Sigrid Pichler Apr 22, 2005:
How did you translate this sentence then?
Non-ProZ.com Apr 21, 2005:
The subject of the sentence Please note that the articles are the subject of the sentence. One can write "a lot of paper/effort/time has been wasted" and so on, but these are not translations of the sentence.

much ink has been spilled?

This could refer back to the articles (spilled on/over articles...)

Just a suggestion, but it is an idiomatic expression in English.

neutral Vittorio Felaco : Yes, but remember that the English language tries to avoid any passive form.
