Since last week I get every day breaking news email messages, first from CNN and now even from MSNBC (something related to Elvis).
I tried to make it stop by logging in to the CNN site (had to create an account) and not chosing any message service, but it didn't seem to help.

Does anybody know how this can be stopped?

Regards
Heinrich

same thing here Aug 13, 2008

And I have put the blame on my husband for using my computer to surf the net...

The only way out I could think of was to mark the messages as spam.

Spam Aug 13, 2008

It is a spam and it has nothing to do with the real CNN or MSNBC. Do not click on any links in the messages, just delete them.

things are not what they seem Aug 13, 2008

Hi Heinrich,

I also receive those emails. Check the email address and you'll see it's not CNN bothering you... I just mark them as spam.

Spam Aug 13, 2008

I've been getting them too for about a week or so - they're sent straight to my spam box by gmail (I give it a quick scan every day or so). There's a about 8 of them every day, nothing to do but delete I'm afraid.

TOPIC STARTER
Tried that already Aug 13, 2008

In Thunderbird I always click on scam, but nevertheless they arrive in the Inbox and Thunderbird does not put them away automatically. I wonder why not. The same applies to Viagra Official site, I always put them into scam but the program does not learn.
Any advice?

I forgot to add: my link is safe to click on ---> it appears they are trying to get you to download a corrupt version of flash player so they can install a trojan on your system. And you don't really wanna do that, now!

Mark them as spam directly from your email provider (not just Thunderbird) Aug 13, 2008

I mean, go to your web based email and mark them as spam. Additionally, you can create a filter (from your email prov. or Thunderbird) so the emails are sent directly to your trash folder. Don't use the email from the From field, use the Sender's email if they're different. Spammers tend to use a fake email in the From field.

Spam. Aug 13, 2008

I have always taken great pried in not ever receiving any spam mail. that is until recently. I don't really surf the net, only to find answers for the Kudoz questions. And I don't give out personal information, but recently I have been receiving about 5 or 6 junk emails daily. I errase them and send a report to hotmail, but there are always more.

Poor old spam (spam, spam, spam) Aug 13, 2008

There is some debate about the source of the term, but the generally accepted version is that it comes from the Monty Python song, "Spam spam spam spam, spam spam spam spam, lovely spam, wonderful spam…" Like the song, spam is an endless repetition of worthless text.

Another school of thought maintains that it comes from the computer group lab at the University of Southern California who gave it the name because it has many of the same characteristics as the lunchmeat Spam:

* Nobody wants it or ever asks for it.
* No one ever eats it; it is the first item to be pushed to the side when eating the entree.
* Sometimes it is actually tasty, like 1% of junk mail that is really useful to some people.

Very bad news ! Aug 13, 2008

I am not used to this with my Mac, so while working at a friends' on a PC, I wasn't wary enough and did click on a "story" that intrigued me. Disaster ! Very nasty virus, I'm having to re-do her system. If it has happened to anyone, a download /copy of Ultimateboot to use as a bootable CD seems to be a cure- but be sure to attack the viruses from before reinstalling the system. Best to ask a savvy friend for advice if you're computer-ignorant like me !

I haven't had any luck labell

I haven't had any luck labelling them as spam either, maybe they change the sender address all the time.

Pc viruses generally don't affect Macs Aug 14, 2008

I think jthink was saying that viruses that affect PC's generally do not affect Macs, so clicking on a suspicious link that releases a virus on a PC won't have the same effect a Mac.

One of the many good things about Macs

You do - your e-mail address is visible in your CV and it can be harvested by spammers.
