I had another career, as a book editor (and later as a Ph.D. student). I love translating, and I love working for myself even more.

Like Stephen, I had a previous career elsewhere (in insurance), but making the move into translating full-time was the best thing that I could have done. I just wish that I had done it years earlier!

Before I started in translation, I used to teach French in English-speaking schools.
Well, one of my recurring nightmares when I am not well is to be in front of the kids and shouting "no, I'm a translator, I should not be here, take me away from here" !!!!

I too have experienced multiple areas of work: shop assistant, secretary, programmer/analyst and bartender/waitress to name but a few.
And I'm not just a translator today, but language trainer, translator, jobseeker coach and unpaid roadie during the summer.
I've enjoyed all my jobs and am very happy that I became a translator. If I had my life agai... See more I too have experienced multiple areas of work: shop assistant, secretary, programmer/analyst and bartender/waitress to name but a few.

I've enjoyed all my jobs and am very happy that I became a translator. If I had my life again I would probably choose to go freelance earlier on, although I did enjoy all the perks of working at Shell for many years. ▲ Collapse

Even though I didn't really "choose" translation, rather dr¡fted into it via TEFL, although I had always studied and enjoyed languages. Nowadays I wouldn't change it unless there was a really powerful reason, and certainly not for anything involving commuting and traffic etc.

My childhood dream was to become the first female pilot/captain of the German Lufthansa. But... since the "gods" were apparently against it, sending an accident my way to end this dream, yet leaving me as a lifetime flight addict, i turned to what I love second best: languages, translating and all related tasks.
All things considered, I am happy with my life and am, therefore, cheerfully translating and editing on and on and...
Having become and working as a translator, a freelancer, above all, is not at all the worst of "second choices" one can make.

Most other days, though, I would have replied no, nay, never!

Agreed.
Although I'm enjoying my current translation, I'm not enjoying working today, Sunday. I've got revision to do this evening too, so it's not much fun. This is definitely not a perk of being a translator.

Yes, working on a Sunday is about as "great" as working into Sunday. The day is dawning and the translator is yawning.
But this is still better than no work at all.

Agreed! I think this IT translation I'm working on right now explains why I gave an emphatic "yes" as well! I can hear my friend (and downstairs neighbour) watching Twin Peaks and I'm so jealous of him right now!
