Scam regarding a ProZ.com job post. Thread poster: Javier Moreno Pollarolo

I just got this email regarding a job that was posted in ProZ.com. Please be advised it might be as scam, as it has been previously reported in different sites. The job link is (or was) http://www.proz.com/job/468001
I didn't respond since, lately, my Scamdar has improved a lot.

Thank you for your urgent response to my request. I was in between projects, a little bit of a busy day that is why i have not been able to respond to your email earlier than now. I am a disable private businessman, looking for a translator.I have checked your CV and i am pleased to tell you that i have chosen you to work on the project for we are in between a new business that will require us to write out in Spanish and some other language. I truly understand your stand, about your manner of work. I attached a sample of the work titled project A, just want you to have understanding of what we are about to do together.
Private investor Neckonj Inc, i work on short time business still working on strong capital but we all start somewhere.

Now i guess you have an idea of the person you about to start work with, attached is a sample. The delivery date is negotiable but must be before December 15, 2010.
The total number of the words are about... 13,000 words so to convert from English to Spanish,i believe you know its a bit large work project states the followings..
++ Please state it out, the amount you charge for per word
++ please calculate the total amount, also state out the discount..
++ categorically state your city and country of residence?
++ Can you state out your date of delivery and method in which you will have all done
I hope we can come to term for success of this project. Thank you

Now, the name varies as well in different versions of the scam, so it can be somebody hacking email accounts to run the scam.

Why mention that he/she is disabled? Makes no sense to me, personal information in work-related emails - that's a warning sign right there. If he/she had a third eye or liked to crossdress, that would be fine, and none of my business. But any professional would keep personal information out of their emails.

In this case, I checked the address he gave me and it was a copy store in the Mission District of San Francisco. Flag 1.
Name of the business nowhere to be found besides next to letters of the same kind in Google. Flag 2.
And then, why somebody who lives in the Bay Area would send an email at 3:00 AM? Flag 3.
With my company info he/she could go and scam more people.

I received almost the same message. the result, 8 days later, was
that I received 4 000 Euros in travelers checks by regular mail (I was supposed to
receive 400€ before starting the translation), and being asked to cash them asap
and send the change (3 000 €) back by Western Union to Spain.
Of course the travelers were fake and I didn't cash them.
Hereunder find an extract of their contact mail responding to my

The sample text is dummy: a cut and paste from "TENERIC Business
Plans" site.

Sure, establishing a rapport with the victim through sharing personal information, I get that. But in this particular instance we're talking about service providers. The best scam would be one that you'd never suspect to be a scam, in other words a professional approach resembling the ones we receive daily.
Am I really the only one who would take several steps back if a client, in his/her first mail, starts sharing personal information totally unrelated to the task at hand?

"I fell from the stairs yesterday and broke both of my arms and takes 2 months to heal. Would you be kind enough to take this XXX to YYY translation job, and how much would it cost you, blah blah blah"?
I know that the word 'disabled' already rings a bell, and like Laurent pointed out, this tactic is rather worn out, but would the broken arms sound ring a bell if you received this kind of info in the first contact? Would be very hard to tell, wouldn't it?
Oh, and by the way, Erik, I loved your mentioning of crossdressing.
