Sorry but I don't buy that thing of wanting your children to be whatever they may want to be etc. etc. For a professional loving his/her trade, it is only natural to secretly wish that his/her children took over and to be able to help them as their experienced counselor and tutor in translation.
Don't you harbour that wish, not even a little bit? Is translation treating you guys so badly that you don't want your children to follow your steps?

If my children have both the talent and interest to become a translator, I wouldn't advise against it. I enjoy my work as a translator to the fullest and can therefore imagine my children would as well. The most important thing, however, is that they grow up to be their own people making their own decisions. I guess I'll just wait and see...

I don't have children, but will some day and think the same as Kata: I want them to become whatever they want. Most of all, I hope they can find a profession that they enjoy as much as I enjoy translation, whatever it be.

of course I love my job, and if one of my kids want to be a translator, I'll encourage him or her... but do I WANT it? I just want them to do whatever job they'll enjoy doing, and hope that it will allow them to have a good life... at the moment, my eldest wants to do research in weather forecasting (yes, strange idea, I know), the other one wants to be a garageman and the youngest dreams of becoming a mom! I reckon we are misunderstanding the question: It is "would you like", not "do you plan for", "are you forcing to", or "do you expect from". Just whether you would like it if it happened. So the matter here is not what you children would like or do in the end, but whether it is a nice thought that the eventually became translators!
If you are honestly saying that there would be no special delight for you in seeing your kids become translators, I really wonder what is going wrong in ... I don't have any children yet, but hopefully one day I will. Clearly they can do whatever they want, can you stop them? But translation wouldn't be my first choice for them.

Of course, I love my job, I think it's the best But then again, I'll warn them that financially speaking, it's quite tough at the begining!! I've only be a freelancer for one year, so I'm hoping its gets easier after a while

Anne and Kata, you seem to be thinking along the same lines as me.
I love what I do, I really get a kick out of the things I translate and finding the right word for the spirit of what was written. Providing tools to communicate with other people to my students and seeing them used gives me a great buzz. Forming a link between people who have things to say to each other is immensely satisfying.

What I wish for my children is for them to have the same joy in their work as I have in mine, or as indeed their father, who sells mechanical parts, (can't see it myself but he loves it) does. It doesn't matter what they do, really it doesn't. The languages they are learning today can not but help them in their life choices. We can give them language, we can show them passion for life and for what we do with it; any further choices are their own.

Today, with the world wide open, their horizons are open. Why restrict them.
My father is a dentist, my mother was a teacher. They gave me the foundations of what I am today. I can but hope to do the same for my children.

.. if they would like to become translators. My daughter of 8 just loves to help me with translations, for example if I have a simple list of ingredients or colours, she loves to suggest translations for me (unless the job is so confidential that I can't show it even to my kids). She is bilingual, so she has a perfect background too. But if she wants to become translator, I wish her to get a rich husband.

.. and no, it would give me no special thrill if they decided to become translators. I'd probably be happier if they carved their own niche and went their own way. But I'd support them if they wanted to translate. I might even outsource to them!
However, as their current ambitious stretch to being a fairy and a fireman, I don't see the issue arising for a while.

... mothers just want their children to be happy.
My case too: I wish my son to be as thrilled with his job as I am with mine, whatever his choice. I sort of talked him out of translation a few years ago: I do not think he is ready for freelancing yet. Not that he cannot translate well, but he may be a bit young to manage the stress.

This poll is indeed a tap confusing. I picked "Yes" because I'd like my kids to love their job as much as I do, no matter what profession they will choose. Time will tell, then.
