Turkish term or phrase: Makam
I'm going to leave Makam , eg Saba Makam, in the original but I want to follow it with a brief explanation in English which can be understood by non-musicologists. The best I can come up with is "melody-type" but I don't really like that and I'm sure there must be something more appropriate. Any ideas?

Thanks

I have actually decided to use a combination of two answers given here ie "a modal system of melody types..." I enquired whether it was possible to choose the two replies and was told no. So I haved decided on "a system of melody types" as I believe it encompasses more of the general short description I was after, if that makes sense. Thank you.

Makam

Explanation:
The Turkish makam is a compositional device which forms the basis for the melodic development of a piece of music and also provides some guidelines for its performance. The importance of the makam is evident from the fact that classical Turkish compositions are named and classified according to their makam, e.g. Rast peşrevi, Hicaz saz semaisi.
