neutral AllegroTrans : "entering an appearance" and attending are separate things (the first is merely a formal acknowledgment of receipt of the the writ etc.)

Thanks for the comment, AllegroTrans! I think that's the idea behind "presentarse en el expediente judicial" in Spanish: to become involved in a case by filing a counterclaim (or another kind of submission) in the proceedings after being served notice.
