agree Olga Cartlidge : "Doctrinam" stands for "Knowledge" here (should be "scientiam"). It can t possibly be used in the Ablative as "probare " would have no object, it would just say "demonstrated".("Demonstrated a commendable knowledge of genetics in passing statutory exams".
