ludoteca/ludotecaria

Italian to English Other Names (personal, company) professions
The mother of one of my students works in a 'ludoteca'. My student thinks the term in Italian is 'ludotecaria'. In the ludoteca they entertain children up to the age of 10 yrs with tales, legends and games, as well as local traditional fables and activities. Can you help me translate both terms? Thanks!

toy library vs playgroup A 'ludoteca' is a public spot organised by the council for kids to go, play and borrow games.
A playgroup is a group of kids supervised by a responsible adult (paid or volunteer) meeting to play together.
Ludotecas may host playgroups, but I would tend to consider them different

In your context, I'd say 'after school club' is the best option. Recreation centres provide activities for children and possibly adults too.

disagree James (Jim) Davis : Not quite the same thing: "Looking to hire toys or borrow from a local toy library?" The context given is a place where children are entertained with tales and games. The definition you and your links give puts the emphasis on "borrowing".

Jim,this person needs to translate the name of a profession.At the ludoteca they entertain kids,and also offer that borrowing service (hence -teca).That's what they do and they are paid by the council.Your comment would define a library as a reading room?

I must admit I'd thought about this myself...being a nursery nurse...but I don't think it fits! I'd thought about actually defining it as a 'centre where children are entertained in different ways" - I mean, without giving it a 'one-word' translation.

4 - Ludotecas vary in the services they offer. Some act as full-time nurseries, but do not to serve lunch, so you have to pick the child up for lunch and then drop her/him off again afterwards. Some offer "baby-parking" services meaning that children can be left for short periods. Others do not offer babysitting services at all, parents or childminders go to the Ludoteca with the child, so they can play or partake in activities with other children.
