'en plein vol' is not really the key element I my suggestion, I just felt it was a good way of expressing that it was almost 'stopped in its tracks', as it were! I wonder if this plane was actually shot down, or merely damaged?

: I'm a bit confused: you say that you got no Internet results for 'volant au niveau de vol...' but did for 'volant au niveau FL...' — yet it is the former you have suggested as your answer? / Ah, but that's not what you actually say above!

In fact. I proposed "volant au niveau de vol FL xxx", not "'volant au niveau de vol xxx". And this got Google hits. "FL" is essential as well as "niveau de vol"

Si c'est un texte non technique, pourquoi ne pas utiliser une notion plus parlante (pieds), comme il a été suggéré ci-dessus.

: If it was a non-technical text, 'FL' would have been way out of register in EN; but in any case, it's important to get it right, and AFAIK this isn't a space flight ;-) (16, not 160 kp)
